Scientific Seminar Held on “Measuring Internal Traits: Developing Reliable and Valid Scales”
On February 24, 2026, in the coworking hall of the library of Khoja Akhmet Yassawi International Kazakh-Turkish University, PhD, Senior Lecturer Nazira Tursynbayeva from the Faculty of Education and Humanities conducted a scientific and methodological seminar entitled “Measuring Internal Traits: Developing Reliable and Valid Scales.” Master’s and doctoral students of the university participated in the seminar and became acquainted with the scientific foundations of measurement methods in psychology and social sciences.
During the event, participants were introduced to the theoretical and methodological foundations of scientifically measuring internal and personality traits. Different types of measurement scales—nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio—were comprehensively discussed. The importance of selecting an appropriate scale and developing it in accordance with scientific standards was also emphasized.
The main part of the seminar focused on the methodological and statistical foundations of scale development and provided a scientific rationale for the Likert scale, which is widely used in social sciences. Participants were introduced to the concepts of reliability and validity, as well as the stages of constructing high-quality measurement instruments in scientific research. Furthermore, the specific features of measuring personality traits and internal psychological characteristics were analyzed, with academic motivation presented as an illustrative example. Through practical examples, the operationalization of internal psychological constructs and their measurement methods were clearly explained.
Throughout the seminar, participants became familiar with key factors to consider when selecting scale types and exchanged views on the practical aspects of designing scientific questionnaires.
The event became a substantive academic platform aimed at enhancing the research competencies of master’s and doctoral students and deepening their knowledge in the field of psychometrics.
