The renowned Kazakh theater and film actress, People’s Artist of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Meruyert Otekeshova, visited our university, where she was warmly welcomed by faculty and students.

The meaningful meeting coincided with the actress’s 75th jubilee. Celebrating the anniversary of an artist who earned national recognition through her portrayal of Zhibek in the legendary Kazakh film Kyz Zhibek was a great honor for the university. Marking such a significant date within the university walls and providing students with the opportunity to engage with an iconic cultural figure became a truly memorable and inspiring occasion.

The purpose of the meeting was to give young people, particularly students majoring in Acting, the chance to hear firsthand reflections on the role of artists in society, aesthetic values, and cultural perspectives. The event also highlighted the creative legacy of Otekeshova’s late husband, the distinguished actor and People’s Artist of Kazakhstan, Kuman Tastanbekov, with whom she shared both her life and artistic journey.

During the event, Rector Zhanar Temirbekova noted:

“For more than fifty years, the film Kyz Zhibek has held a special place in the hearts of audiences, and its central character Zhibek was masterfully portrayed by Meruyert Otekeshova. Seventeen years ago, while working as an editor and translator at the international organization TURKSOY, we published her photograph alongside a comprehensive article by the prominent scholar Seit Kaskabasov on the Kyz Zhibek epic. This remains a cherished memory. Undoubtedly, every Kazakh associates the film and the image of Kyz Zhibek with deeply personal recollections.”

In her address, Meruyert Otekeshova emphasized:

“To develop culture, one must go to the theater. There are many talented and cultured young people today. However, becoming a famous artist should not be the ultimate goal. The greatest goal is to remain a true human being.”

According to the actress, carrying the image of Kyz Zhibek extends beyond a cinematic role—it represents a lifelong philosophy. She stressed the importance of upbringing, integrity, respect within family life, and the preservation of national values. Otekeshova also underscored that women should embody responsibility and honesty both in their professional careers and in society, serving as examples of culture and dignity.

As part of the celebration, first-year Journalism student Asylzhan Yesimkhanuly dedicated a special tribute to the honored guest.

The meeting concluded with congratulations on Meruyert Otekeshova’s 75th anniversary and the presentation of commemorative gifts. In keeping with university tradition, the distinguished guest also planted a tree on the university grounds.
