Today, the university library hosted a presentation of the book The Horde: How the Mongols Changed the World by renowned French historian Marie Favereau.
The main objective of the event was to implement the country’s strategic initiatives in accordance with the initiative of the Head of State, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, to develop a culture of reading and foster an intellectually engaged nation. The event also sought to promote the history of the Golden Horde and introduce students to the new work of the historian.
The event was jointly organized on the initiative of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan by Steppe & World Publishing, the Embassy of France in the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the university.
It is worth noting that the French historian Marie Favereau’s book The Horde: How the Mongols Changed the World was published in English in 2021. Translated into 15 languages, the book was presented to Kazakh readers this year as part of the Golden Horde conference. The Kazakh translation was prepared by Nazgul Kozhabek and the team at Steppe & World Publishing.
The event was attended by the book’s author and scholar Marie Favereau; renowned publisher Raissa Sairan Kadyr; Vice-Rector for Social and Cultural Development Yedil Tolegenov; members of the library staff; university historians; representatives of the intellectual community; elders; and students.
During the informative meeting, Marie Favereau first spoke about the process of writing The Horde: How the Mongols Changed the World. She also delivered a lecture on her work.
The author explained that she had spent 20 years studying the history of the Ulus of Jochi in stages, gathering new evidence and supplementing her research with additional information.
The scholar noted that, while writing the book, she had made comprehensive use of written sources in Arabic, Turkic, Russian, Old Italian, Latin, and Persian, as well as the results of archaeological research. In her work, the author examines in detail the place and role of the Ulus of Jochi and the Golden Horde in world history. The book covers trade routes, diplomatic relations, the development of cities, and cultural ties between the East and the West.
At the conclusion of the informative meeting, historians and elders exchanged views on current issues in the study of the history of the Ulus of Jochi and the Golden Horde. They also expressed their gratitude and appreciation to the scholar for her dedication in writing the book.
Afterward, Vice-Rector for Social and Cultural Development Yedil Tolegenov presented gifts to the guests on behalf of the university. Marie Favereau and publisher Raissa Sairan Kadyr, in turn, donated copies of The Horde: How the Mongols Changed the World to the library.
Following the event, the guests toured the university’s extensive library and visited the panoramic museum of the history of Turkic peoples at the House of Culture.
